"Marcello Giordani... is luxury casting as Pinkerton; it’s a rare pleasure to hear an ardent-voiced Italian tenor of this quality sing his own language with such authority and musical taste."

SUMMER 2010 HIGHLIGHTS

6 May 2010 — Faust at the Teatro alla Scala of Milan and Norma at the Salzburg Festival - From June 18th to July 5th, Marcello Giordani will be seen on the stage of the Teatro alla Scala of Milan in the role of Faust in a new production of Gounod’s opera by Eimuntas Nekrosius, one of today’s most renowned theatre directors. Giordani’s debut in this best known and most frequently performed of Gounod’s operas took place in Baltimore. He reprised the role for his debut with the Los Angeles Opera in 2000, and the following year at the Opéra Bastille of Paris, where his performance of the famous aria “Salut demeure chaste et pure" – one of the opera highlights – stopped the show.

In the La Scala production, the role of Marguerite will be sung by the Moldovian soprano Irina Lungu, and Italian bass Roberto Scandiuzzi will appear in the role of Méphistophélès.

In August 2010, Marcello will make his debut as Pollione in a concert performance of Bellini’s Norma at the prestigious Salzburg Festival. Norma is undoubtedly one of the greatest masterpieces of the bel canto repertory, requiring the vocal agility of a “dramatic coloratura soprano” (as this vocal category has often been defined) in the title role, and a tenor voice capable of sustaining Bellini’s melodic line while conveying dramatically the conflicting emotions of the character. To do full justice to the vocal requirements of Bellini’s score, the Salzburg Festival has assembled an extraordinary international cast which includes soprano Edita Gruberova as the Druid priestess, mezzo-soprano Joyce Di Donato as Adalgisa, Norma’s friend and rival, and bass Ferruccio Furlanetto as Norma’s father, Oroveso. The two performances will take place on August 9 and 14.
