Francesca da Rimini at the Met

The strikingly beautiful production of Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini by Italian director and scenographer Piero Faggioni returns to the stage of the Metropolitan in March 2013 after an absence of 27 years. Staged for the first time at the Met in 1986 with Placido Domingo and Renata Scotto as the doomed lovers, Paolo and Francesca, it will be revived with two major stars of the today’s international opera world: Marcello Giordani and Eva-Maria Westbroek.

Les Troyens: An opera of "epic" proportions

In April 2008, Marcello Giordani joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Levine in a concert performance of Berlioz’ monumental opera Les Troyens to sing for the first time the role of Enée. In December and January of the 2012-13 opera season, Gordani will reprise the challenging role of the Trojan hero in the Met’s revival of the opera.

The Metropolitan Opera’s 2012-2013 season will see Marcello Giordani in three very different and very challenging roles: Calaf in Franco Zeffirelli’s dazzling production of Puccini’s last opera Turandot; Eneas in the grandiose production by Francesca Zambello of Berlioz’s epic masterpiece Les Troyens; and Paolo il Bello in Riccardo Zandonai’s Francesca da Rimini in the stunning production of Piero Faggioni.

A message to my fans and friends

Many of you may already know of my decision to withdraw from the last four performances of Les Troyens. The decision was made in mutual agreement with the administration of The Met and, in order to counteract any misunderstanding which leads to erroneous assumptions and unpleasant conclusions, I want to say that it is with profound regret that I give up one of the most interesting roles in the entire operatic repertoire.

Puccini's Turandot at the Met

In October 2012, Marcello returns to the Metropolitan Opera to reprise the role of Calaf in Puccini’s Turandot which he sang for the first time at the Met in 2009. His debut in this role took place in 2003 in Torre del Lago, Italy, and he has since sung it in many of the major opera houses of the world including Teatro alla Scala of Milan, the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Terme of Caracalla in Rome and the Hungarian State Opera of Budapest.
